File photoAn alleged Bangladeshi smuggler was killed in a clash with the Border Security Force at Magroli in Kailashahar in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Sunday. Two BSF personnel were injured in the incident, according to the force.
In a statement, a BSF public relations officer said that around 1.25 pm, the paramilitary personnel observed 15-20 people carrying goods on their heads approaching the border fence from the Indian side and 25-30 others from the Bangladesh side coming with a bamboo ladder.
“BSF troops challenged them to stop but they didn’t pay heed, became aggressive and encircled the BSF jawan on duty. Sensing imminent danger to life and government property, the BSF jawan fired one round of pump-action gun, which hit one of the smugglers and he was apprehended,” the official said.
The BSF also said that around 10-15 miscreants assaulted a BSF jawan and tried to snatch his weapon and take him to Bangladesh territory. The jawan fired once again, upon which the smugglers on the other side retreated further to the Bangladesh territory, it added.
In the incident, another BSF jawan sustained a “grievous injury” on his forehead and he was evacuated to the nearby district hospital. He is now learnt to be stable after preliminary treatment.
The injured jawans were identified as Ram Hari Das and Mohan Lal.
The man who was killed in the BSF action was identified as Saddam Hussein, 23, who was a resident of Dastaki village in Bangladesh’s Moulovibazar district. Though he was rushed to the district hospital along with one of the injured jawans, doctors declared him “brought dead”, according to the BSF.
Another person was also learnt to have been injured in the firing but was taken to the Bangladeshi territory by the people who came from that side of the border.
The BSF has raised the matter with the Border Guard Bangladesh with a flag meeting.
Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides and parts of the 856-km international border are still unfenced.
