Ayodhya Ram Mandir ceremony: These states have declared a holiday on January 22

The government Thursday announced that all central government offices will remain closed for half a day on January 22 on the occasion of the Ram temple consecration ceremony to be held in Ayodhya

Preparations are underway in Ayodhya as the Ram temple consecration ceremony is set to take place on January 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the chief guest at the event and around 7,000 people are expected to attend it.

The government Thursday announced that all central government offices will remain closed for half a day on January 22 to enable employees to participate in the celebrations.

Let’s take a look at the states which have declared January 22 as a holiday:

Uttar Pradesh

Referring to the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya as a “rashtra utsav” (national festival), Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday directed all educational institutes across the state to observe a holiday on January 22. He also said that sale of liquor would not be allowed across the state on the day.

Goa

Goa CM Pramod Sawant has announced a public holiday in the state of Goa on January 22 on the occasion of the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony. An official notification reads, “Government of Goa declares public holiday to all State Government Department, Autonomous bodies, Corporations and State Government aided institutions.”

Haryana

The Haryana government under Manohar Lal Khattar has also declared January 22 as a holiday for all the schools. It has also been declared as ‘dry day’ forbidding alcohol sale and consumption on this day.

Madhya Pradesh

All government offices in Madhya Pradesh will remain closed for half a day, and schools and colleges will have a holiday on January 22 on the occasion of consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, officials said.

The entire country will be celebrating the consecration ceremony on January 22, and all offices and institutes of the state government will remain closed till 2.30 pm so that people can participate in the celebrations, a government notification issued on late Thursday night said. Two separate notifications were also issued by the School and Higher Education Department declaring holiday for schools and colleges on January 22.

Assam

Half holiday has been declared for all state government offices and educational institutions across the state of Assam till 2:30 pm on January 22.

Odisha

All state government offices as well as the revenue and magisterial courts (executive) in Odisha will remain closed for half a day till 2.30 pm on January 22 in view of the Ayodhya event, said a notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department.

Chhattisgarh

The Vishnu Deo Sai-led government has announced January 22 as a holiday for all educational institutions in Chhattisgarh. The state government has also declared January 22 as a ‘dry day’.

Uttarakhand

In view of the Ayodhya Ram Temple ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony, all government offices in Uttarakhand will remain closed till 2:30 pm on January 22. All educational institutions in the state will remain closed, as instructed by the Uttarakhand government.

Tripura

The Tripura government declared a half-day holiday in the state on January 22 in view of the consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya. The state government issued a notification late on Thursday night regarding the closure of offices till 2.30 pm on January 22, they said.

“On the line of notification of the Centre, the state government has decided to declare holiday in all government offices and institutions to witness the pran pratistha of Ram Lalla at Ayodhya on January 22 till 2.30 pm,” Secretariat Administration Department’s Deputy Secretary Ashim Saha said in the notification.

Chandigarh

All government offices, boards, corporations, institutions including industrial establishments in the Union Territory of Chandigarh shall remain closed on January 22 in view of the Ayodhya Ram temple ceremony, according to a notification issued by the Home Department of the UT administration.

Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government on Friday announced a public holiday on January 22, the day when the grand idol consecration ceremony will take place at the new Ram temple in Ayodhya.

A notification from the state government said exercising powers given by the Ministry of Home Affairs, it has decided to announce a public holiday on January 22.

Gujarat

On Friday, officials announced that all government offices in Gujarat will remain closed for half a day on January 22 to celebrate the consecration of Ram temple, reported PTI. A notification regarding the closure of offices till 2.30 pm on January 22 was issued by the state government late on Thursday night.

Puducherry

Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy on Friday announced that January 22 would be a public holiday in the Union Territory in view of consecration of Ram Mandir. He said that all state government offices, educational institutions and undertakings would remain closed on January 22, PTI reported.

The centrally administered JIPMER also announced a half-day holiday, till 2.30 PM on January 22, and advised patients to avoid coming to the outpatient department during the time period.

Rajasthan

The Rajasthan government on Friday declared half-day on January 22. According to the order issued by the General Administration Department, all government offices will stay shut till 2 pm on January 22.

Besides these offices, all other government undertakings such as schools and colleges too will be closed for the first half of the day.

Meanwhile, the Jharkhand BJP has urged the Hemant Soren-led government to declare January 22 as a state holiday. Karnataka has not declared January 22 as a public holiday, even as private school managements plan to live-stream the ceremony for students. The Associated Managements of Schools in Karnataka (KAMS) has issued a directive to all its member schools to not announce a holiday for students and to live-stream the consecration ceremony instead.
