Assam Rifles jawan ‘dies by suicide’ in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district

Official sources say incident occurred early morning inside the Company Operating Base in Motbung

An Assam Rifles jawan allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Monday.

Official sources said the incident occurred early morning around 3.40 am inside the Company Operating Base (COB) of Alpha Company situated in Motbung.

As per a complaint filed by the havildar of the company, Prijesh M, a single round of gunshot was heard. Subsequently, a few soldiers were awoken by the sound and started searching the company’s premises. The jawans found a body with a bullet wound on the chin, lying on a rock adjacent to the COB temple. The service rifle issued to the victim and a fired cartridge were recovered from the spot, added sources.

The reason is yet to be ascertained and no suicide note has been found. A case has been registered by the police station concerned in connection with the incident.
