A 40-year-old woman lost her life and four others were injured after an SUV, being driven by a man who was allegedly drunk, went on a hit-and-run spree in Ahmedabad Saturday evening, police said.
The incident took place around 6.30 pm near HCG Hospital in Mithakhali area of Ahmedabad where the driver of a white colour Skoda Kodiaq SUV hit three pedestrians and at least two vehicles, injuring five persons.
A woman, Ronakben Dhaval Parikh (40), lost her life to critical injuries, said police officials.
The accused, Nilesh Jagdish Patel, was arrested by the police shortly after the incident. He is a resident of Bareja in Daskroi taluka of Ahmedabad and is involved in the logistics industry, said police officials.
DCP Neeta Desai of Traffic (West) said that the driver who caused the accident is prima facie suspected to have been driving his vehicle under the influence of alcohol, adding he has been sent for a medical checkup to assess his blood-alcohol level.
DCP Desai said Patel will be booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, and attempt to commit culpable homicide under different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He will also be booked under the Motor Vehicles Act under sections for drunken driving as well as rash and negligent driving that puts the life and safety of others at risk, she added.
On claims that a man in a black Scorpio with “police” written on it had reached the spot to attempt to save the accused, DCP Desai said, “We have learnt of this person as well. During investigation, if this turns out to be true, we will book this person as well for abetment (to crime). We are still collecting CCTV footage from the area and if there are police staff involved in the matter, action will be taken against them as well.”
