A group of people on Thursday assaulted members of an NGO in Indore on suspicion of religious conversion, police said.

The incident took place outside the Indore Press Club premises, where members of the NGO, including two women, had arrived to address a press conference on allegations that they were involved in converting village residents in Dewas district.

In videos that went viral on Thursday, a group of people are purportedly seen disrupting the press conference and creating a commotion. When the NGO members stepped out of the venue, they were assaulted by the group, who accused the NGO of indulging in religious conversion.

“We have been working in Shukrawasa village of Dewas district for the past five years in areas such as education, healthcare, employment and legal aid. The suspicion around conversion is completely baseless,” Sourav Banerjee, a member of the NGO, told reporters.

Banerjee said the right-wing groups assaulted the NGO members without any evidence. “Let them bring even a single person whom our NGO has converted,” he said.

Police said they were investigating the allegations, but that no formal complaint had been received in the matter. “So far, no formal complaint has been received. We are investigating the allegations that have been made,” said a police officer.
