Abdul Karim ‘Tunda’ acquitted in 1993 serial blasts case

The police reached the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court with Tunda, Irfan and Hameeduddin at around 11.15 am on Thursday amid tight security. All three were accused in the serial bomb blasts that took place in trains at Lucknow, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Surat and Mumbai on December 6, 1993.

A special court in Ajmer on Thursday acquitted Abdul Karim ‘Tunda’ (80) in the 1993 serial blasts case. Two other accused, Irfan (70) and Hameeduddin (44), have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The police reached the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court with Tunda, Irfan and Hameeduddin at around 11.15 am on Thursday amid tight security. All three were accused in the serial bomb blasts that took place in trains at Lucknow, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Surat and Mumbai on December 6, 1993.

The lawyer for the accused said they would appeal the sentence given to Irfan and Hameeduddin in the Supreme Court.

The lawyer, Abdul Rashid, said Irfan, who is around 70% paralyzed, has been in jail for about 17 years and Hameeduddin for 14 years.

Two people were killed and several more were injured in the 1993 blasts that took place in trains in five cities.

The CBI clubbed all the cases and sent it to the TADA court in Ajmer in 1994. All the accused have been in jail in Ajmer.
