The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) on Friday notified the long awaited data protection rules, paving the way for India to have a functional privacy law, eight years after the Supreme Court ruled it as a fundamental right. The notification of the rules comes over two years after the Digital Personal Data Protection Act received the President’s assent in August 2023. Read more
The home of Dr Umar Nabi, who allegedly drove the car that exploded outside the Red Fort Metro station in Delhi on Monday, has been razed by the authorities. The house, located in Koil in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, was blown up overnight after moving the residents, including Nabi’s parents, brother and sister-in-law, out. Nabi had been employed at the School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre at Al Falah University at Dhauj in Faridabad. Read more
The Karnataka High Court recently convicted a newspaper editor for publishing defamatory articles on a police officer. The editor, T Gururaj, was accused of making baseless allegations to defame a police officer, who had previously arrested him. The petitioner, SN Suresh Babu, who was working as the circle inspector of police at K R police station in Mysuru, alleged that Gururaj, being annoyed about his arrest, intended to take vengeance against him by publishing baseless claims. Gururaj was initially acquitted by a trial court, after which the petitioner approached the HC. Read more
Uber, the popular ride-hailing service, has started rolling out a new feature that enables in-app video recording for drivers in India. The company's new in-app recording functionality is meant to safeguard drivers from misconduct and false allegations. As of now, Uber’s in-app video recording feature is available as a pilot test in 10 cities across the country, including Bengaluru, Chennai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Mumbai. When a driver starts video recording, a notification will be sent to the rider to make them aware that they are being recorded. Read more
The US approved the sale to Taiwan of fighter jet parts for $330 million, the Pentagon said late on Thursday, marking the first such transaction since President Donald Trump took office in January. “The proposed sale will improve the recipient’s capability to meet current and future threats by maintaining the operational readiness of the recipient’s fleet of F-16, C-130,” and other aircraft, the Pentagon said in a statement.
