Arrested in 2019 for possession of over 15 kg of brown sugar, two men from Kupwara in North Kashmir were on Monday sentenced to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court. Syed Ishfaq Shah and Khursheed Ahmad Gojar were apprehended by local police in 2019 and 15 packets of one kg each containing brown sugar were recovered from them.

Ordering the sentence, the judge noted that, according to their disclosure statements, the two were in touch with an individual in Ferozpur, Punjab, to whom they had to sell the contraband. Both Shah and Gojar are residents of Karnah along the Line of Control in Kupwara. Apart from the 20 year sentence, both have been fined Rs 2 lakh each.

Additional District Sessions Judge Khemraj Sharma highlighted that “the menace of drugs is on increase these days and the main sufferer of this menace is the younger generation of society”.

He said: “Due to this menace, the life of the younger generation is being put in peril of destruction, thereby affecting not only individual families but the society in large.”

“In order to save the youth, who are the future of the society, from destruction, the easy availability of drugs including supply thereof at doorstep is to be curbed with an iron hand,” he said.

Additional Public Prosecutor Dar Rashid said, “It is a good thing that we are able to secure such convictions. We are dealing with such cases across J&K and it is our top priority everywhere.”

The two men were arrested in December 2019 when, acting on information received by the Karnah police station, the police party apprehended Shah and, after further questioning, he “disclosed that he along with one Khursheed Ahmad Gojar went near the LoC and brought 15 kg of brown sugar for smuggling”.
