UPSC Mains Admit Card 2024 Updates: CSE admit card out at upsc.gov.in

Candidates can download their UPSC Mains admit card from the official website – upsc.gov.in.

If a candidate have changed their name by following the legal process, they will have to carry (in each session of the Civil Services(Main) Examination, 2024) a Government issued photo Identity Card and/or original Gazette notification of the changed name. Further, they will also be required to submit an undertaking at the time of the examination.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has extended the date for the registration of the Common Admission Test 2024. Now, the registration will be closed on September 20. 

•  Candidates who do not have clear photographs on the e-admit card will have to bring passport size photograph, one for each session, for appearing in the examination with an Undertaking.
• Use of Scientific (Non-Programmable type) Calculators is allowed and if considered necessary may be brought by candidates. Programmable type calculators are, however, not allowed in this examination.
• Violation of any instruction(s) shall entail cancellation of candidature of the candidate in addition to any other appropriate action that may be taken by the Commission against the candidate under the rules of the examination.
• Candidates may please ensure that all the details such as Name, Photograph & the QR Code on their e-Admit Card, are correct. In case of any discrepancy(ies), they may contact UPSC in this regard.

Enter the Examination Hall 30 minutes before the scheduled commencement of the Examination in each session. Entry to the Examination Hall closes 30 minutes prior to the scheduled commencement of the examination in each Session.

Candidates are advised not to bring any valuables/costly items in the Examination Halls as safe keeping of the same cannot be assured. The Commission will not be responsible for any loss in this regard.

Students will have to bring e-Admit card (print out), along with the (original) Photo Identity Card, whose number is mentioned in the e-Admit Card, in each session to secure admission to Examination Hall. E-Admit Card must be preserved by the candidate, said the website of UPSC.

A recent parliamentary standing committee report flagged concern over an increase in doctors and engineers entering the field of civil services. Further, it showed data that pointed out a steady decline in the number of candidates from the humanities stream opting for civil service between 2011 and 2020.

From 27 per cent such candidates qualifying for the annual civil services exam in 2011, the number has dropped to 23 per cent in 2020, according to data in the 131st report on “Review of Functioning of Recruitment Organizations of Government of India”, tabled by the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice. After investing years in the preparation, aspirants often find themselves at crossroads preparing for a backup career, in case they do not qualify the exam. 

While some aspirants take a break from the preparation and hunt for other opportunities only to land back in the competition again, many continue to appear for other exams alongside. 

The UPSC CSE main examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.

The candidates have discretion of opting for their own scribe or request the Commission for the same. The details of scribe i.e. whether own or the Commission’s and the details of scribe in case candidates are bringing their own scribe, will be sought at the time of filling up the application form online as per proforma.

The interview and personality test will carry 275 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks).

The UPSC CSE Main Examination will consist of a written examination and an interview or personality test. The written examination will consist of 9 papers of conventional essay type in the subjects set out in sub-section (B) of Section-II out of which two papers will be of qualifying in nature.

Marks obtained for all the compulsory papers (Paper-I to Paper-VII) and Marks obtained in Interview/Personality Test will be counted for ranking.

Candidates who obtain such minimum qualifying marks in the written part of the Civil Services (Main) Examination as may be fixed by the Commission at their discretion, shall be summoned by them for an Interview/Personality Test

The number of candidates to be summoned for Interview/Personality Test will be about twice of the number of vacancies to be filled. 

Every candidate appearing at the examination, who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted six (6) attempts at the CSE. However, relaxation in the number of attempts will be available to the SC/ST/OBC and PwBD category candidates who are otherwise eligible.

A total of 14,627 candidates cleared the UPSC CSE prelims exam. This year, the Commission aims to fill 1,056 vacancies, including 40 seats reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).

UPSC CSE prelims exam was conducted on June 16 and the result was declared on July 1. 

This year, Aditya Srivastava and Animesh Pradhan have bagged AIR 1 and 2 respectively, followed by Donuru Ananya Reddy at the third spot. As many as 31 candidates from Residential Coaching Academy (RCA), Centre for Coaching and Career Planning, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) have been nominated in the UPSC Civil Services Result 2023. AIR 9 (Nausheen) is also from the same institute.

Each exam day will have two sessions: the morning session from 9 am to 12 noon, and the afternoon session from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

The UPSC CSE mains 2024 examination will begin with the essay paper on September 20. On September 21, candidates will appear for general studies paper-I in the morning session and general studies paper-II in the afternoon. The following day, September 22, will see general studies paper-III in the morning and general studies paper-IV in the afternoon.

UPSC invited bids from PSUs to provide technology services during the examinations conducted by it. The services that have been listed in the tender recently floated by the Commission include Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication (else Digital Fingerprint Capturing) and facial recognition of candidates; QR Code Scanning of e-Admit Cards, and live AI-based CCTV surveillance service.

The tender documents also said that the exam schedule, detailed list of exam venues, and the number of candidates for each venue will be provided by the UPSC to the provider of these technology services two to three weeks before the examination “for making on-site preparation”. UPSC will also provide candidate details (name, roll number, photo etc.) seven days before the exam for use in fingerprint authentication and facial recognition.

The service provider will have to deploy QR code scanner-integrated hand-held devices along with sufficient manpower at every examination centre and the QR code on the admit card will be scanned to auto-fetch the candidate’s details from the database provided by UPSC.

CCTVs are to be deployed in every exam hall or room “to monitor various activities of the candidates and other persons deployed to conduct the Commission’s examinations.

Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication, facial recognition of candidates, and live Artificial Intelligence-based CCTV surveillance are among the measures that the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) now plans to introduce to prevent “cheating, fraud, unfair means and impersonation” during the examinations that it conducts.
