Record 23.81 lakh students register for NEET UG 2024

NEET UG 2024 Total Candidates: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test UG (NEET UG) this year registered 23 lakh applications for the exam scheduled to take place on May 5.

This time, the National Testing Agency (NTA) recorded an all time high in the overall registrations for graduate medical entrance examination.

This time, a total of 23,81,833 students have registered for NEET UG 2024, of which over 10 lakh are male students, over 13 lakh are girls and 24 students have registered under the ‘third gender’ category. Out of the registered 23 lakh students, over 10 lakh students are OBC NCL as per list, 6 lakh are general students, 3.5 lakh are Scheduled Caste (SC) students, 1.8 lakh students are from Gen-EWS category and 1.5 lakh are from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

NEET UG 2024 is scheduled to be conducted on May 5, and the NTA has clarified that no change will be made to the exam date, even after the election schedule was announced last week.

State-wise registrations

Region-wise, Uttar Pradesh has registered the highest number of candidates with 3,39,125 registrations, followed by Maharashtra with 279904. Rajasthan at 1,96,139. Southern states Tamil Nadu registered 155216 applicants while Karnataka is at 154210.

Interestingly, even in the number of qualified candidates, last year, Uttar Pradesh had the largest number of qualified candidates with 1.4 lakh candidates, followed by Maharashtra (1.3 lakh) and Rajasthan (1 lakh).

Comparison from previous years

Last year, a total of 20,87,449 candidates registered for NEET UG 2023 and the exam was held on May 7, out of which NTA recorded 97.7 per cent attendance and the re-exam was conducted for nearly 8,700 candidates. The exam was conducted at 4097 centres across 499 cities in India and abroad.

The number of NEET UG registrations has been soaring for the past few years. The number has gone up from 18 lakh registrations in 2022 to 20.87 lakh in 2023 and then jumped by nearly three lakh this year.

A similar trend has been spotted in the number of students appearing and qualifying for the exam, The number of students who appeared for the exam increased from 17 lakh in 2022 to 20.36 lakh in 2023 and is expected to grow this year. The number of qualified students also increased from 9.93 lakh in 2022 to 11.45 lakh in 2023.
