The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, will now train principals of schools in Delhi so as to capacitate them to function better as heads of educational institutions. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the institute and the Delhi government for the same.

Heads of schools from a total of 1,024 schools, run by the Directorate of Education, Delhi, will benefit from the MoU.

All principals will undergo an intensive course, which will be administered by IIM-Ahmedabad, for a period of 18 months, press release by the Delhi government stated, adding that the sessions will be conducted at the institute’s Right to Education Resource Centre.

In the past, there have been collaborations with University of Cambridge, UK, and the National Institute of Education, Singapore, as well for the up gradation of the national capital’s government school education system, the release informed.

“The heads of schools functioning in Directorate of Education run institutions have a rich wealth of experience in managing schools. Their capacities to run an academic institute should be supplemented by professional training in leadership, especially in the field of school education.

“The Government is serious about building skills and capacities of all principals, teachers working in our schools, and I am confident this step will go a long way towards improving the way individual school managements function,” Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. He also holds the education portfolio.

The Delhi government said that several steps are being taken to improve the quality of schools in terms of infrastructure, teaching-learning methodology, narrowing learning deficits, etc. Principals are the pillars of every school and for a school to do well, it is important to strengthen school leaders, the release said.
