Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday felicitated 11 teachers from various schools of the union territory on the occasion of Teachers' Day. Five teachers were awarded silver medals and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 each for their outstanding services in the field of education while six others, including a specially-abled teacher, were given certificates of appreciation.

Nagaland celebrated Teachers' Day 2023 today by honouring 18 teachers for their dedicated and sincere service in moulding students.
Of the total, 13 teachers were from government schools and five from private schools were honoured during the state-level Teachers' Day function, the PTI has reported.

Each National Award to Teachers 2023 carries a certificate of merit, a cash award of Rs 50,000 and a silver medal.

Dinesh Babu J, associate professor at the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru, has been awarded the National Award to Teachers for developing an innovative UPSC virtual reality interviewing platform.

"This cutting-edge technology employs AI and virtual reality, featuring five virtual interviewers who evaluate candidates online. These interviewers skillfully probe candidates on diverse subjects such as Indian history, Constitution, and current affairs, incorporating follow-up questions. An IAS academy has collaborated with IIITB paving the way for its real-world application," the citation read.

Reyaz Ahmed Sheikh from Government Middle School in Kashmir's Anantnag took initiative to start an enrolment drive in which door to door visits were made resulting in bringing 30 students back to school. He motivated and counselled the parents through regular capacity building to allow girls to attend school regularly.

Ningthoujam Binoy Singh from Chingmei Upper Primary School in Manipur himself cleans the school campus and toilets regularly.
"Singh revived his school which was in an inhospitable condition when he joined. He was instrumental in transforming the infrastructure, some of it even by spending his own money,which brought students back to school. He motivated the parents of the dropouts to send them back to school by visiting their homes," it said.

Netai Chandra Dey from Ramakrishna Mission school in Arunachal Pradesh has attended school on all working days for the past 11 years.
"Dey has put tremendous efforts to set up a science museum and a science laboratory in the school. He has attended school on all working days for the past 11 years. He is working hard towards character building of students in addition to imparting formal education," the citation said.

Mujib Rahiman from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kerala's Palakkad developed a software in 2007 which provides free access to many school libraries in India. "He has designed library websites and a mobile application for easy access to online services. As an IT expert, PTI said, he has successfully trained 600 librarians through 11 Inservice Training courses," Rahiman's award citation read.

From the CISCE, the government has selected Bhupinder Gogia, and Ritika Anand and Sudhanshu Shekhar Panda from CBSE for the National Award to Teachers. Ravi Kant Mishra has been selected from Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, and Manoranjan Pathak from Sainik Schools under ministry of defence. Dr Yashpal Singh will represent Eklavya Model Residential Schools under Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Mujib Rahiman K U and Chetna Khambete have been selected from the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

While Dr Radhakrishnan was serving as the second President of India in 1962, his students approached him with the request to celebrate his birthday – September 5 – as a special day. To this, Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request to observe September 5 as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to society.

Droupadi Murmu will honour the selected teachers from across the country with "National Awards to Teachers 2023" today, from 4:15 pm onwards.

To celebrate Teachers’ Day, most schools organise cultural functions in which students thank the teachers for their work in the form of songs, dances, plays/ skits, poems and more. A lot of senior students also dress up as teachers and handle classes during the day.

"For me, the biggest motivation to put so many videos is the comments where most of the subscribers say that they got a job or learned a specific technology because of my videos. The efforts, time, energy and resources we put into making those video is surely worth it,” Navin said.

During the pandemic, schools adopted different online tools to help teachers and students bridge communication. While all the teachers that indianexpress.com talked to said their school gave them enough training for it, some of them argued that those tools, which were once a boon, have now become a bane for them as the workload has increased.

“Earlier, if a student was absent, it was their duty to sit in extra periods and complete their classwork with the help of fellow students, but now parents expect us to come back home and make notes of whatever we taught, and then send it in the form of a PDF on WhatsApp. It is a lot of extra work for us,” said Prabha (last name hidden), who has been teaching for nearly 30 years now.

Every year, India celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (September 5) as National Teachers’ Day as a tribute to his contributions and achievements.

President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to Dr S. Radhakrishnan, former President of India, on his birth anniversary at Rashtrapati Bhavan, on the occasion of Teachers' Day 2023.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has saluted the teachers on Teachers Day for their unwavering dedication and great impact in building our future and inspiring dreams, stated PIB. "Teachers play a key role in building our future and inspiring dreams. On Teachers' Day, we salute them for their unwavering dedication and great impact. Tributes to Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary," Modi said.

“Life is a continuous learning process and hence lifelong learning is important, it applies to our teachers also which is reflected in Malaviya Mission," Dharmendra Pradhan said at the launch of Malaviya Mission — Teacher Training Programme.

Roshni had been passionate about the teaching profession since her school days, and used to explain small concepts or portions of the syllabus to her peers during group studies, which were highly praised by them. After completing her post graduation, Roshni got placed in an IT firm where she worked as a quality analyst.

In 2011, I started surfing social media platform such as YouTube for entertainment purposes. I enjoyed watching tutorials of creating videos on these digital platforms. “Then, I started using the platform to create videos related to several things, but the views were not that great because the platform was not as famous back then as it is now,” she recalled.

What started as a single-man army has now transformed into a team of 20 people and over 2.68 million subscribers. Roshni also four YouTube channels, one website and a mobile app now.

The Bihar education department has withdrawn its order curtailing the holidays of school teachers on Diwali, Durga Pooja, Raksha Bandhan, and other festivals, as per a government order.

"The holiday table issued for government/ government-aided elementary and secondary/higher secondary schools under departmental order memorandum no. 2112 dated 29.08.2023 is cancelled with immediate effect," a circular issued by the Director of Secondary Education read.

The Bihar secondary education department had earlier announced the reduction of holidays for teachers from 23 to 11 which led to huge furore among teachers in the state who had even warned of protests.

Prof Indranath Sengupta, Professor of Mathematics at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), has been selected for the National Teachers’ Award 2023 by the Ministry of Education for his dedication and contribution to higher education and enriching the lives of his students. 

Prof Indranath Sengupta did his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Mathematics at Jadavpur University and PhD from IISc Bengaluru. He was a faculty at the Jadavpur University for 13 years. He has also served at the University of Missouri Columbia, USA, as a visiting faculty in 2007 and taught at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Education and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math, during 2008-2010. Prof Sengupta joined IITGN in 2014 and currently Heads the Department of Mathematics at the Institute.

He has received several grants and fellowships from India and abroad for research activities, including the BOYSCAST fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India in 2003-04 to visit the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA, and Ayudas Para La Estancia de Investigadores de Otras, University of Valladolid, Spain, in 2009. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Teachers Award 2022 for his teaching contributions. 

"A spectacular archive of India’s collective achievements as a democracy and a lighthouse of knowledge, I am sure the immersive experience will benefit our teachers immensely," Pradhan tweeted.

This time, the Ministry has selected 75 teachers for this award. The 75 teachers include— 50 school teachers, 13 teachers from higher education and 12 teachers from Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. 

Each award carries a certificate of merit, a cash award of Rs 50,000 and a silver medal.

"Teachers not only transmit knowledge and moral ideals to children, but by empowering them, they make an important contribution in building a strong society and a strong nation. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan completed his entire education through scholarships. He earned a master’s degree in Philosophy and also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936, and the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1939, succeeding Madan Mohan Malviya. 

He went on to teach at Chennai’s Presidency College and Calcutta University. In 1954, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna — the highest civilian award in India. He was admitted as an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

Every year, India celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (September 5) as National Teachers’ Day as a tribute to his contributions and achievements.

Narayan Parameshwar Bhagwat (55) is one of the two teachers from Karnataka selected for the prestigious National Award for this year. Bhagwat is a Kannada teacher at Shri Marikamba Government PUC High School, Sirsi in Uttara Kannada which houses a total of 1529 students accounting for the school with the highest number of students in Karnataka.

“I wanted to make learning fun and dramatic during the lockdown. I collated voice notes sent by all Kannada teachers across the state and weaved it into different episodes of online drama. These included some of the lessons in Kannada language expressed in dramatic and artistic form. About 10 episodes were uploaded on YouTube for students to watch and learn,” said Bhagwat.

When Covid-19 took over the world and the medical fraternity was working day and night to help people, it fell on teachers to ensure that a global pandemic does not hinder the growth and mental health of children. In no time, schools shifted from the traditional offline classes to the new format of online classes. And teachers -- irrespective of their age, background and financial status -- started adapting to the new types of technology tools.

"During the pandemic, our numbers were passed on to parents for better communication. Now even though classes have resumed and parents can come and meet us any time in the school, they prefer to call us personally after school hours and take reports of their children. We understand that parents can be busy during the day to visit the school, however, that doesn't mean that we are always free to pick up calls during our family time," said Prabha Ajayan, a teacher from Indore.

Inspired by the Khan Academy, Sandeep Manocha started his YouTube channel a few months before the Covid-19 outbreak. However, it was the pandemic that brought million of views to his channel. As the pandemic hit and everything turned online, Sandeep started making videos on YouTube and got positive feedback, so he took the decision to stop physical classes.

“My goal was to educate about science and math in a practical way. For example, I’m driving the car and teaching them speed velocity, and showing them Archimedes principle experiments,” he explained.
