Cuba has evinced interest to collaborate with Kerala, said an official communication, following Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s discussion with Cuba’s first deputy public health minister Tania Margarita Cruz in Havana on Friday.  Vijayan, his Cabinet colleagues and senior bureaucrats were on a two-day visit to Cuba.

The CM’s office said there would be an exchange of health experts between Kerala and Cuba to understand each other’s public health systems. Kerala has offered training to Cuba to develop Ayurvedic medical streams. Both parties would share research and diagnosis on tropic diseases.

Vijayan also offered Kerala’s support to enhance the functioning of panchakarma centre in Cuba by despatching trainers proficient in the method of treatment.

Vijayan was quoted saying that the entire world admires the achievements of the health sector in Cuba and the collaboration with the country is hoped to be a major asset for Kerala’s public health system. Kerala was optimistic to imbibe inspiration from the Cuban model of public health system, said the release.

Vijayan also met with Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canal, who was quoted as saying that they are ready to work with Kerala in various sectors. “Cuba would collaborate with Kerala in health, sports and biotechnology. The Cuban Cabinet will discuss the areas of cooperation with Kerala, including technical communication and student exchange programmes,’’ he said.
