A 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death in the Hajamchora village of Jamnagar district allegedly by her elder sister and brother on Tuesday, said police, during a ritual linked to the Hindu festival of Navratri.

The incident took place at 3 am on Tuesday, police said, when the three siblings were in the midst of matajina path (a religious ritual linked to Navratri) inside a cottage on an agricultural farm. “Claiming that she was possessed by a goddess, the elder sister said that the younger sister was unlucky for her family and that the family would not progress till the time she was alive. Then, the elder sister and the brother stabbed her to death,” Premsukh Delu, Superintendent of police of Jamnagar, told The Indian Express.

According to an FIR registered at Dhrol police station, the two accused made the teenager sleep on the ground without clothes and then stabbed her. “As part of their observance, the victim had not eaten anything for the past two days and was already weak,” Delu further said, adding, “Postmortem revealed that prima facie, the victim died due to multiple stab wounds. However, this is not a case of typical human sacrifice wherein generally the victim is beheaded.”

Delu said that the three siblings are tribals and hail from the Dahod district of Gujarat. They were working as agricultural labourers on the land owned by Bipin Baraiya who also filed the complaint in the matter.

“The land owner informed police about the incident on Tuesday. Subsequently, we contacted the victim’s parents who are in the Dahod district. However, they refused to file a complaint. Eventually, the land owner filed a complaint,” the SP said, adding, “A case of murder has been registered against the two elder siblings and they have been held.”
