Yerawada asylum case: No provision to compensate kin
Pawar said prima facie it did not appear that the hospital authorities had been negligent. The patient has been stable during his stay at the hospital.
State health authorities on Friday admitted that there were no provisions to provide compensation to family members of two patients, who were allegedly strangulated to death by a mentally ill patient at the regional mental hospital,Yerawada. However,we will submit a proposal to the government to consider their case, said health director Dr Satish Pawar, who had marked an inquiry into the incident.
Deepak Survase (28) from Ahmednagar, who is being treated for poly-substance abuse with psychosis,on Wednesday night allegedly strangulated two patients,38-year-old Baburao Landge from Satara and 52-year-old Shamshuddin Bhanvadiya from Kalyaninagar. Hospital authorities said the incident occurred late in the night, when one of the patients pulled his blanket and Survase suddenly turned violent.
Pawar said prima facie it did not appear that the hospital authorities had been negligent. The patient has been stable during his stay at the hospital. However,we have set up another probe panel headed by Deputy Director Dr Kanchan Jagtap, he added.
The state director of health admitted that the hospital was grappling with serious problems. For the past two to three months,we have been taking cognizance of various issues like staff shortage and faulty drainage line. Several problems, including supply of proper uniforms to inmates, are being resolved, Pawar said. The hospital is spread across 110 acres and the proposal to instal CCTV cameras will have to be studied as it is a large area,Pawar said.
