Indian-origin British Member of Parliament Keith Vaz met on Saturday the family of Pune-based student Anuj Bidve who was murdered in Britain last month and handed over a cheque of £1,000 to the family.
Vaz met Bidve’s parents Subhash and Yogini and his brother-in-law Rakesh Sonawane at a hotel in Mumbai.
We spoke for a fair amount of time,during which he expressed his concern and sorrow for what had happened. He also said that he intended to work towards repairing relations between India and the United Kingdom which might have been affected by the incident, Anuj’s father Subhash told The Sunday Express .
Anuj,23,an engineering student,was shot dead by two unidentified men in Salford,Greater Manchester.
Speaking to reporters,Vaz said the meeting with the family was extremely touching. I will try my best to be present at the trial of the murder which is to begin in June, he said.
He said the Lancaster university plans to set up an annual scholarship in memory of Bidve. Vaz also said the perception about India in the UK is extremely positive and that he will continue to work on improving relations.
