The Pune chapter of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF),Talegaon,is set to join the rescue operations for the Leh flash flood victims. The NDRF will deliver a specially designed 11,000 litre water storage and distribution system. Titled Emergency Rescue Unit (EMU),the system is designed by city- based Aquaplus Disaster Management and will be airlifted and carried to Leh by Wednesday.
The NDRF team in greater Noida is deployed for rescue operations in Leh and we are helping them with the administrative support and relief materials. The water tank will be delievered by Indian Airlines and delivered to Delhi from Mumbai. It will then be dropped to Leh via IL76 aircraft, said Alok Avasthy,commandant,NDRF.
The system which consists of water treatment equipment along with two storage tanks- one made from GI steel and other from PRP have been designed to withstand the worst conditions in a disaster-hit area. The tanks are a result of inputs from Oxfam,UNICEF,Red Cross and University of Surrey,UK. They have been designed specifically for natural and manmade disasters such as earthquakes,wars and so on. We had earlier used them during the relief operations for Kosi floods in Bihar, said Rahul Pathak,head,Disaster Management Unit,Aquaplus.
The system will also be accompanied by a team of two engineers- Katrice King and Parmeshwar Patil who will install the system and train the NDRF team to operate the same. The engineers will be in Leh for a week post which it will be handed over to our officials, added Avasthy.
