The safety and security of businessmen, along with issues like traffic congestion and illegal parking of vehicles, were discussed at a meeting between traders and Pune police on Wednesday.

An increase in thefts committed by women at the Tulshibag market on crowded weekends was among the key issues flagged during a meeting held by the Pune City police and members of traders’ unions and hawkers’ associations from key markets in the city, at the Fergusson College Amphitheatre on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, a press release issued by the police stated that patrolling by women police personnel in the Tulshibag market area would be intensified to prevent thefts.

About 45 representatives of grocery traders, jewellers, timber market businessmen and hawkers’ associations were present at the meeting held in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Krushikesh Rawal.

Various other issues regarding the safety and security of traders and businessmen, along with problems caused by traffic congestion and illegal parking of vehicles, were also discussed during the meeting.

Officials from the Faraskhana and Vishrambag police stations were asked to conduct a study of the problems in Tulshibag market, as traders pointed out that some people were cutting the wires of the CCTVs and loudspeakers in the area.

According to the press release, the police have decided to act against the illegal hawkers on the FC Road footpath. The police also appealed to the traders to conduct a proper verification of their staff, and asked traders and shop owners to install CCTV cameras that would also cover the roadside areas.

During the meeting, jewellers were asked to inform the police while transporting gold and to seek police security at the time.

In light of traffic congestion and issues caused by improper vehicle parking on the roads, the police stated that home guards could be deployed to assist traders with security in market areas.

“But the traders would have to pay for the services provided by the home guards. The traders can inform the local police station in writing about the number of home guards required…,” the press release stated.

It added that the police would take action against illegal parking of vehicles on the Z Bridge and unauthorised auto rickshaw stands in the marketplaces.

With heavy vehicles being banned from entering the city, the police said the traders could use smaller vehicles for transporting goods to their respective establishments.

Police officials from the Khadak, Samrath, Faraskhana, Vishrambag, Shivajinagar and Deccan police stations attended the meeting.
