With the India-New Zealand match beginning this Thursday, the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) ground in Pune will host a Test match after a gap of five years. The last match at the stadium was held in 2019 against South Africa and was won by India by an innings and 137 runs.

Currently, the Indian team is looking to make a comeback in the three match Test series after a loss in the first match in Bengaluru.

Newly elected Honorary Secretary of the MCA Kamlesh Pisal told The Indian Express, “We have gotten a massive response in terms of ticket sales. It is record-breaking and we never expected it. We have a full house on the weekends and around 80% of the total tickets have been sold. We opened with a season pass which led to higher sales there as well. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are playing so that is also a plus. We have a Diwali vacation and the weekend as well.”

There have also been sporadic instances of rain in Pune, which have caused water logging in some areas. The India Meteorological Department’s local weather report and forecast for the Pune-Pashan region predicts partly cloudy skies from the first four days of the match. “We have our fingers crossed, but now I think there is less chance of rain from October 24,” said Pisal.

Ajinkya Joshi, the CEO of MCA, said, “Even if there is some rain, we are prepared with covers and our outfield very good. I am confident the match will be completed.”

Talking about the pitch, Pisal said, “I can’t comment on the pitch as it is the BCCI curator’s prerogative but I’m sure it will be a result-oriented pitch and the spectators will not be disappointed.”

Pisa also talked about the facilities provided at the venue for the match and said, “We have constructed structures on the east and west side of the ground to take care of the sun in the daytime. Drinking water will be provided for free at the ground and food stalls will be available. All Punekars and people from this part of Maharashtra should enjoy cricket, the team needs our support.”
