Symposium on police reforms today at Tilak Smarak Mandir

The Professional Party of India will organise a symposium on ‘Police reforms: Need of emerging India’ at Tilak Smarak Mandir auditorium from 5.30 to 7 pm on Thursday.

Social activist Medha Patkar will deliver the key note address.

The symposium will focus on how the Bombay Police Act 1951 which governs the police in Maharashtra and is more or less a reproduction of the first Indian Police Act 1861,is considered to be obsolete by many.

It will also delve on how apart from the primary duties of present day police are expected to be maintenance of law & order,prevention of crime,preservation of security and promotion of peace and harmony,police continue to be burdened with additional responsibilities like VIP bandobast,security to select politicians and handling social issues.

The panelists for the symposium include Jayant Umranikar,former police commissioner,Ajit Nimbalkar,former State Chief Secretary and RTI activist Vivek Velenkar.

As part of the PPI’s Citizen Connect programme,the panelists will release a “Legal Aid handbook,” an easy to understand ready reckoner of commonly used laws,stated a PPI release.

The book will deal with RTI,Disability and the Law,Protection of Women from Domestic Violence,Adoption,Traffic laws,rules and regulations,Contracts,Gifts,Law of Wills,Types of Legalentities,Partnership laws,cyber laws,dishonour of cheque,consumer protection laws,food adulteration,sale of drugs and cosmetics and Arrest and Bail.
