Maharashtra Open from Tuesday India's number one amateur golfer S Chikkarangappa will start favourite at the Maharashtra Open amateur golf championship,which begins on Tuesday at the par-71 Poona Golf Club. The event is the fourth in the Indian Golf Union's (IGU) Indian Amateur Golf Tour calendar this season. Chikkarangappa - who set the course record at the Poona Golf Club,an 8-under 63 set during the Western India Junior golf championship in 2008 - will have competition from fellow Bangalorean Khalin Joshi and Delhi's Gagan Verma,ranked second and third in the IGU merit list. Pune's Aditya Bhandarkar and Farrokh Mody are also expected to do well. The top 30 on the IGU merit list,who qualified automatically,will be joined by 53 players who made it through a qualifier held last week at the Oxford Golf and Country Club as well as four nominees of the Poona Golf Club. After the first two days of play,45 players will make the cut to play the final two rounds. Basketball: Deccan,PYC clinch titles Hosts Deccan Gymkhana clinched the men's title at the Poona District Basketball Association's senior district championship on Sunday by beating IMED 49-37 in the final. Yogesh Bahirame top-scored for Deccan with 18 points. PYC Hindu Gymkhana prevented Deccan from achieving a home double by beating them 47-32 in the women's final. Wins for DSK Shivajian,Amanora Deccan Goals from Prakash Thorat and Kingsley Harrison gave Amanora Deccan XI 'A' a 2-1 win over Knights XI 'A' in the Senior Division VOBA tournament at Vincent's school ground on Monday. Harrison scored the eventual winner three minutes into the second half,after Victor Das had equalised for Knights in the 37th minute. In another match,DSK Shivajian 'A' beat Mischief Makers 5-4 on penalties after the game had ended in a 1-1 draw in normal time. Naved Shaikh got on the scoresheet in the third minute for Mischief Makers,before Joe Colaco equalised in the 56th.
