Soon,door-to-door garbage collection in Cantt area

The Pune Cantonment Board will soon start door-to-door garbage collection facility.

The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will soon start door-to-door garbage collection facility. The board cleared a proposal in this regard, which had been pending for over a year,at a meeting recently. The PCB has roped in Swayambhu Transport for the task.

“We have decided to introduce door-to-door garbage lifting facility from next month. One vehicle will be deployed for collecting garbage from 100-200 houses and it will visit a particular area at an appointed time which will be notified.”

He said the facility would be provided free of cost and that there was no decision yet on the replacement of dustbins in the areas covered. PCB members have been pointing out that garbage bins placed at different points and housing societies cause stench in the areas.

Officials said the garbage collected by the vehicles will be disposed of at the Hadapsar dumping site. A trial run will be carried out in wards 6 and 7 before deploying a vehicle each in all the wards of the cantonment, they said.

The PCB will distribute pamphlets to the residents, urging them to keep dry and wet waste in separate bags. “The elected members will also strive to spread awareness about the initiative,” said an official.

PCB member Santosh Kawade said,“The garbage bins in some areas are broken and garbage is often strewn on the roads. Door-to-door collection will help in proper disposal.”
