Schools across the city are taking various steps to spread awareness regarding swine flu. In addition to talking to students and parents about the symptoms and the ways of preventing flu, some schools are even going to the extent of vaccinating students in school.
St. Vincents School and Symbiosis School are holding camps where students are being immunised. Principal of St Vincents School,Father Andrew said,We have announced in our school that we will be holding a camp where students can get themselves vaccinated. We decided on this after many parents repeated inquiry about such an initiative. We have taken down the names of students who are interested, and will get them vaccinated in school.
The Symbiosis School has sent circulars to parents informing them about the camp. We have a health centre at our school which has sent mails to parents telling them about the vaccination camp. We have put up the registration form on the website itself and as many as 200 people registered on the first day itself. Parents are really happy with the initiative, said Leena Chaudhari, principal of Symbiosis Primary and Secondary School. While many of the other schools are not holding such camps, they are ensuring that there is a thorough check-up of students everyday. Apart from asking students to wear masks and keep using hand-sanitisers,we also have a team of doctors who examine any child showing flu-like symptoms.
If any child has the flu,we immediately send them back home, call up the parents of the children who sit near him in class and also fumigate the rooms,in all the three branches of our school, said Frank Freese, principal,Bishops School.
However, some parents are concerned about the level of hygiene in mass vaccination camps. Sonia Chaudhary, whose son studies in Loyola High School said,Even if my sons school is not holding any such camp,I have already got him vaccinated.
I am not really sure how good an idea it is to hold such vaccination camps because you dont really
know if they are particular about the hygiene. Since,I did not want to take the risk of taking my son to a gathering,I got him vaccinated myself.
