Many people could not get their driving licences on Monday as around 100 employees of the Regional Transport Office (RTO) went on a token strike to condemn the police action against RTO officials in Nagpur over a minor incident on Friday.
Sudhir Bodas, general secretary of RTO Workers Organisation, said,On Friday, our colleagues in Nagpur RTO were arrested by the police officials without any enquiry and permission. The police arrested the RTO staff allegedly in connection with the vehicles they had seized. The police also threatened them with dire consequences.
Bodas said,RTO officers have to frequently face such police action unnecessarily. We want such incidents to stop as they a negative impact on our work. Therefore,we decided not to work for a day. As many as 110 employees out of 150 in Pune RTO went on the strike. When people came to RTO to procure or apply for licences on Monday, they had to return empty handed. Every day at least 800 licences are issued and the strike hampered the work, Chandrakant Kharatmal,RTO said.
The employees have threatened to go on token strike on March 15 and indefinite strike from April 1 if their demands are not met.
