Pune witnessed a dip in temperature with Pashan recording a minimum of 18.1°C, while Shivajinagar at 19°C on Monday — the lowest readings of the season so far. Meteorologists attributed the drop to clear skies and reduced atmospheric moisture as the city transitions toward the post-monsoon phase.
On Tuesday, the city witnessed partly cloudy weather with light rain that is expected to persist till October 9. According to IMD, Pune, from October 10, the weather will turn mostly dry with temperatures ranging between 30°C and 35°C during the day and 16°C to 22°C at night, marking the withdrawal of the monsoon.
For the past few weeks, the city has experienced light to moderate rainfall. However, current forecasts indicate a decline in rainfall activity with the monsoon entering the withdrawal phase.
According to S D Sanap, senior meteorologist with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune, the dip in temperature is a normal occurrence during this period. “When skies are clear, the nighttime heat escapes as there are no clouds to trap the radiation. This leads to a slight cooling,” he said, adding that such variations are typical and usually about one to two degrees lower than the seasonal average.
Sanap also said that many regions across Maharashtra are reporting similar conditions, with minimum temperatures hovering around or slightly below normal.
Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, said the decline in moisture is closely linked to the monsoon’s gradual withdrawal. “As the moisture content reduces, temperatures start to fall. Maharashtra is already entering the withdrawal phase, beginning from the northwestern districts like Palghar, Jalgaon, and Nandurbar,” he said.
Kashyapi noted that the monsoon withdrawal this year is occurring slightly earlier than usual, roughly a week ahead of the normal schedule. “Compared to last year, the withdrawal is happening partially earlier in Maharashtra,” he added.
With cloud cover expected to remain minimal in the coming days, meteorologists say Punekars can expect warmer days and cooler nights- a pattern that typically signals the onset of early winter conditions.
