The Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) has started self-defence classes for girl students in government-run schools.

In the first phase, as many as 2,500 girl students from class 8 to 10 across 72 schools are being taught self defence, said Jamsingh Girase, district program officer (Women and Child Development) at ZP. A budget of Rs 25 lakh has been sanctioned for this effort.

The ZP has also asked non-governmental organisations and groups to provide support for this endeavour.

“It is not possible to start this course everywhere at once. Therefore, we appeal to NGOs to help us provide this training. We want to make it available to all girls in their developing phase so they can defend themselves. A budget of 25 lakh has been sanctioned for this. We have started batches of 35 students in selected schools across gram panchayats. We have begun a primary effort in this regard and hope that we get help from organisations in this,” said Girase.

Last week, a 39-year-old dance teacher of a private school in the city was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing two boys, raising concerns about student safety. However, the self-defence training started by ZP is specifically for girl students and not boys.
