Pune police’s crackdown on modified bike silencers to curb sound pollution
The Pune police launched the crackdown ahead of Ramadan to tackle noise pollution; violators fined Rs 2,000.

The Pune Police on Friday seized 20 heavy motorcycles due to their excessive noise and disturbance to the public. Officers removed the modified silencers used in the vehicles and crushed them under a road roller of the Pune Municipal Corporation in Kondhwa area, the police said in a statement.
According to the police, the crackdown was initiated ahead of Ramzan, as it was observed that bikers using modified silencers are creating disturbances for senior citizens, patients with serious health problems, and school students preparing for the board examinations.

“All the bikers were fined Rs 2,000 each. Their vehicles have also been seized for further legal action,” Rajkumar Shinde, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5), said.
A team led by senior police inspector Vinayak Patankar took action against 20 violators, of which majority of them were owners of ‘Royal Enfield Bullet’ and other heavy motorcycles.
A senior police officer said that some individuals replace the factory-fitted exhaust system of their two-wheeler or make some modifications that result in loud noise like that of bursting of firecrackers during the ride.
The police have also released a video showing the crushing of the modified silencers of 20 motorcycles seized by the Kondhwa police station were crushed using a road roller.
