The automatic weather station installed at the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakvasla registered a minimum temperature of 8.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning. Other parts of the district like Haveli (9.3) and Malin (9.9) have also recorded single-digit temperatures, while the main observatory at Shivajinagar recorded 10.1 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.
The sudden rise and fall of temperature currently is well within the predictions given by India Meteorological Department (IMD) for the next few days.
Temperature in Pune over the last few days has seen dips and rises mostly due to low pressure areas built over the Arabian Sea. While moisture from the area has been wiped out, clear skies and incursion of cold winds from the North has dragged down mercury. Clear skies help in escape of long-range radiations which has a cooling effect on the land. IMD has said there can be a bit of haze in some parts of the city in morning hours.
Various parts of the city at times show different readings in minimum temperatures which is mostly due to local conditions. Areas such as Magarpatta and Koregaon Park which are highly urbanised show a higher minimum temperature than areas like Pashan and NDA which are relatively less concretised record a lower minimum temperature. Pune and its surrounding regions had reported below 10 degrees Celsius in the last week of November with NDA recording another below 9 degrees Celsius figure. The present trend is expected to continue for the next 72 hours after which the city can expect some cloudy skies.
