Pune Metro and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have formed a committee to identify open space around Metro stations to develop parking lots for commuters. (Twitter/PuneMetroRail) Pune Metro and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have formed a committee to identify open space around Metro stations to develop parking lots for commuters, said PMC chief engineer Srinivas Bonala. Commuters have been demanding parking spaces, especially after the recent extension of Pune Metro.
Pune Metro spokesperson Hemant Sonawane said, “Pune Metro does not have separate areas for parking private vehicles. They are planned in association with the civic body. Pune Metro has already written to the civic body seeking parking spaces near stations.”
Pune Metro and the PMC had earlier planned parking spaces near Metro stations in the draft alignment of the rail route. However, the route had to be changed near Deccan, and instead of passing through J M Road, the rail was constructed alongside the Mutha river from Garware College to Shivajinagar civil court.
Similarly, the Metro route planned on Nagar Road was diverted alongside the river after objections to developing it near the heritage structure of Aga Khan Palace.
“Pune Metro is focusing on last-mile connectivity and has joined hands with Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) to provide feeder bus service for ferrying commuters from Metro stations to the desired destination within the vicinity. Also, there has been a tie-up with autorickshaw unions to provide feeder service for commuters,” Sonawane said.
The Pune Metro service from Vanaz to Garware College has recently been extended to Ruby Hall Clinic, and Pimpri-Chinchwad to Phugewadi service has been extended to the interchange station at Shivajinagar civil court. The extension has connected the Pimpri-Chinchwad area with Pune, enabling travel through Metro up to Ruby Hall Clinic, including Pune station on one side and Kothrud on the other side via Deccan.
