Pune City Police on Tuesday launched a Social Media Monitoring Laboratory, under the purview of Cyber Crime Cell to keep a close watch on activities on social media.
The facility, the second of its kind in Maharashtra after Mumbai, has been established to monitor objectionable messages, communally sensitive posts and content that may hurt sentiments of individuals or communities.

Police said that the facility would be used to track any possible gathering of people which may lead to a law and order situation. The lab was inaugurated by Pune police commissioner KK Pathak in the presence of additional commissioner CH Wakde, DCP (Cyber and EOW) Deepak Sakore, DCPs from special branch Shrikant Pathak and Sanjay Patil and other senior officers.
The facility would have a dedicated staff of 18 police constables trained in cyber crime investigation and one officer, and would be functional for 24 hours a day.
Police have urged that complaints about content or activities on social media and phone messaging which have caused or may cause damage to individuals or communities be reported to the local police station from where they would handed over to the lab.
