The constable was rushed to a hospital where his condition is reportedly stable.

The injured police constable has been identified as Amol Katkar, who is currently posted with Unit 3 of the Crime Branch. Katkar, who is being treated at a private hospital, sustained a serious head injury in the incident, officers said.

The incident took place in an area under the jurisdiction of the Deccan Gymkhana Police Station. An officer from the station said Katkar was on his way home on a two-wheeler after completing his duty at around 1 am on Monday when he was attacked. “At Law College Road, he exchanged words with two men on a bike who were riding in an unruly manner and brushed with his two-wheeler. An argument ensued between Katkar and the two men. Initial information suggests they attacked Katkar on his head with a wooden stick. They then fled from the spot on the bike,” the officer said.

Sainath Thombre, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Vishrambag division, said, “Preliminary probe indicates this was a case of road rage.” The police said that Katkar himself informed the control room about the incident. A team of beat marshals rushed to the location and shifted him to a private hospital in the Deccan Gymkhana area, an officer added.

“Our teams are checking the security cameras installed in the area and on the approach roads towards the crime scene. We are also checking whether any criminals on police records are involved. Some concrete leads have been obtained and we hope to arrest the suspects soon,” an officer said.

A case was registered at Deccan Gymkhana police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt ), 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) among others.
