A 43-year-old police constable of the Pune Rural Police, who was severely injured in a suspected hit-and-run case in Baramati town, succumbed to his injuries early Monday.
Police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest the driver of the vehicle involved in the suspected accident.
Sandeep Jagannath Kadam (43), a resident of Baramati and native of Lasurne Chavanwadi village in Indapur taluka, was attached to the Yavat police station for the last two years, and served at the local crime branch of Pune rural police in the past.
Officials from the Baramati city police station said the accident took place on Baramati- Bhigwan Road on September 22 evening when Kadam was walking to a local gymnasium.
“Initial probe suggests that Kadam was hit by a tempo. A relative of Kadam, who was present nearby at the time of the incident, took him to a nearby hospital,” said Ganesh Ingale, deputy superintendent of police (Baramati division).
Kadam was initially admitted to a private hospital in Baramati, and later shifted to Pune. He succumbed to his injuries and resultant complications during treatment early Monday, and his last rites were performed at his native village in the evening.
“The tempo driver had fled the spot, and we are probing the matter to identify and arrest him at the earliest,” Ingale added.
