Police stop marriage of minor,arrest groom

The Pimpri police arrested a 20-year-old groom for trying to marry a minor girl,aged around 14,on Saturday.

The Pimpri police arrested a 20-year-old groom for trying to marry a minor girl,aged around 14,on Saturday. The parents of the groom and and girl were also arrested.

Acting on a tip-off,Pimpri police reached the spot where the ceremony was taking place. The girl is a resident of Nehrunagar,while the groom,Anand Mangalwedhekar,and his parents Krushna and Savita are from Wadarwadi.

The police said the marriage was fixed a few months back and the haldi ceremony was conducted the previous day. M A Sawant,assistant police inspector with Pimpri police station,said,“On reaching the spot,our officers confirmed that the girl looked like a minor. The bride,groom and their parents were brought to the police station for questioning. We asked for the girl’s age proof. Her parents told us she was born at home and therefore did not have a birth certificate. They said other age-related documents were also missing.”

The police sent the girl to Sassoon Hospital for to verify her age. By the time the team reached the hospital,the department had shut for the day. Sawant said,“The relatives of the girl brought her birth record from a hospital in Nehrunagar where she was born. The record showed she was 14 years and five months old.”
