Police launch project to increase carrying capacity of roads, reduce travel time

Traffic police took action against 251 hawkers and issued notices to 156 private establishments besides lodging an offence against one establishment for allegedly obstructing traffic on the 32 roads.

The traffic control branch of Pune City police launched a project to take up measures to increase the carrying capacity and reduce travel time on important roads in the city.

As a part of this project, the traffic police and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have since August 16 been categorising different roads in the city based on how much they are used.

Once this is done, traffic police, with the help of other stakeholders, will then take up measures to prevent traffic jams and reduce travel time on these roads.

A press release issued by additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil on Saturday stated the police was also planning measures to prevent traffic jams on 32 major roads in the city through traffic isolation techniques and parking management.

Police conducted a major drive against traffic violation and other illegal activities on these 32 roads between August 15 and 21. During this, action was taken against 2,412 tempo vehicles, 607 cranes, 123 heavy vehicles and 92 other vehicles found driving on footpaths. Action was taken against 299 vehicles for driving on the wrong side, 31 vehicles for taking wrong turns and 1,032 for jumping signals.

From August 1 and August 22, the traffic police had conducted a special drive and took action against four minor boys for driving different vehicles and 636 persons for rash driving. Police also took action against 203 persons for drunk driving and 1,304 persons for driving vehicles with fancy number plates. Police said 2,212 two-wheelers were fined for carrying three people.
