The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) swung into action to provide necessary health services to affected citizens and ensuring no drinking water was contaminated, after 76 patients of water borne diseases were identified in Bavdhan Budruk. "The civic health department visited 597 houses in Bavdhan Budruk and carried out screenings of 2,351 citizens. A total of 33 new patients were identified today and water samples of 23 houses have been sent to the laboratory for testing," said Vaishali Jadhav, Assistant Medical Officer. She said the PMC had found that many citizens of the area reported stomach illnesses since the last four days and 43 patients were identified till Tuesday. The localities of Bundewasti, Patilnagar Jadhavwasti and Gaothan of Bavdhan Budruk were affected, with patients reported from these areas. The PMC immediately undertook a door to door survey to screen citizens of the affected area. "Citizens have been urged to drink only treated water, boiled water, using Mediclore and ORS. A civic medical centre in the area is providing treatment to patients, " said Jadhav, adding the number of patients being reported to medical centres was on the rise. Jadhav said many patients reported mild symptoms, so there was no need to treat them, but others exhibiting more symptoms were treated at the medical centre. She added the situation was under control. Private health practitioners have been asked to take all possible care of patients reported to them and informing the civic health department of the same. Jadhav said, "The infection is due to impure water, so the civic water supply department has been urged to provide treated water in the locality." PMC water supply department in-charge Nandkishor Jagtap said the civic administration had identified contaminated water caused by a drainage line blockage. "Repair to the drainage line has been completed so there should not be any problem now. However, we will continue to keep a watch if the contamination is from another source," he said.
