Pay ‘n’ park scheme unjust,says BJP

The BJP city unit has decided to oppose the pay and park scheme initiated by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on city roads.

“The civic body’s pay and park scheme cannot be justified when it has failed to provide an efficient public transport system,” said BJP leader Mukta Tilak.

Citizens have been paying taxes but the civic body has failed to provide them with efficient public transport system,she said adding,“There was no choice for citizens but to depend on private vehicles. So,it is improper to charge them for parking vehicles.”

A BJP delegation will meet Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade and urge him to take back the decision to implement the pay and park scheme on city roads.

The civic administration had introduced the scheme saying it would decongest the roads and encourage citizens to use public transport. The present charges are Rs 2 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 5 per hour for four-wheelers.

The civic body plans to introduce the scheme on all the city roads and have already started it on major roads.

However,protests from the citizens had made the elected representatives pass a resolution to drop two-wheelers from the pay and park scheme and allow them free parking.

The civic administration has been justifying the decision citing the transport policy of the union and state governments.
