Parties repose faith in women members

Politics in city has taken a new turn with parties showing confidence in the ability of women members.

Politics in city has taken a new turn with parties showing confidence in the ability of women members. Almost all parties have either started sending their women leaders to state legislative council or giving them higher responsibility in party affairs.

“It is visible that the city politics is undergoing transformation as all parties are promoting their women members. It should also be seen as good work done by women at local level that is being rewarded,” said city NCP chief Vandana Chavan. Chavan was recently entrusted with the responsibility of heading the city unit and simultaneously elected to the state legislative council.

The Congress recently appointed former mayor Kamal Vyavhare as the state president of women wing while nominated another former mayor Dipti Chaudhari for the state legislative council.

“The city politics so far has been dominated by men,” she said, adding that the change reflects the growing participation of women and their ability to perform in politics. Chavan expressed confidence that the move of parties to promote would make a big difference at ground level. “I wont claim that all women leaders connect well with the party workers or citizens, but it’s easier with those having skills to reach closer and being accepted,” she added.

Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said all parties have at last started recognising the good work of women leaders at local level and their ability to perform at higher level. “It was first started by Shiv Sena by electing me to state legislative council. The party leaders showed confidence in me,” she said, adding,“Women of the city will have a larger voice in legislative council with many representatives making it to the Upper House.”

Vyavhare said,“The promotion of women at higher level in politics will create more opportunities for those working at local levels. It will increase the role of women in decision making process,” she said.

Nominated to contest poll for council seat on Friday,Chaudhari said it was only because of her efforts that she could make it to the local civic body and then proved her credential after being appointed as mayor.
