There was finally some respite from spiralling onion prices in the wholesale markets of the city. Onion prices went down from Rs 60-70 a kg to Rs 45-50 a kg for the old stock of the Rabi crop. The onions from the Kharif crop were at Rs 30-40 a kg at the Gultekdi Market Yard.
While officials of the Maharashtra State Agriculture Marketing Board said this could be a combined effect due to the change in export norms and the statement issued by the state agriculture minister that raids will be conducted to stop the possibility of hoarding, traders in the city said the dip in the sale of onions led to the fall in prices.
Compared to the rates on Wednesday Rs 3,500-Rs 4,000 a quintal the average price on Thursday came down to Rs 3,250 a quintal as per the Agricultural Produce Market Committee rates. On Thursday,Pune got 8,959 quintals of onions.
Till Wednesday ,the price was as high as Rs 70-Rs 100 per kg in the city retail market, depending upon the distance from the wholesale markets (which adds extra transportation cost) and also the location and customer base of the markets.
Shivlal Bhosale, chairman of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Commission Agents Association, said: While the prices may have come down, the quality of onions is not very good. The entire old stock from the Rabi crop, that has longer shelf life, has been sold out. With the new stock from the Kharif crop, both farmers and traders have no option but to sell it due to its short shelf life.
Prices are expected to stabilise by the end of the month if onions from Madhya Pradesh,Rajasthan and Gujarat come into the market and improve the supply situation. At present, there has been a 50 per cent dip in the total stock arrival in the state, compared to the same time last year.
