Bringing down the maternal mortality rate and setting up the patients’ rights charter at hospitals tops the agenda of Dr Sanjay Gupte, the city-based gynaecologist who has taken charge as national president of the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI). The Federation has 212 member societies and 25,000 members across the country.

Gupte, who was elected as President of FOGSI at the 53 rd All India Conference of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Guwahati ,announced a slew of plans at a media briefing on Monday.

With India standing 127th in the maternal mortality rate list,Gupte said that 38 per cent of maternal deaths are due to bleeding at the time of delivery. There are various steps that FOGSI has proposed to control it and that includes making available drugs like Misoprostol which are cheap. These simple measures will save several women,Gupte said.

Apart from reducing maternal mortality and improving patient-doctor relations, the FOGSI president also said there was an urgent need to reduce gender discrimination.Grievance cells will also be set up in each member society. Through these cells any member or other doctors indulging in such practices can be reported to the legal authorities.
