THE NATIONAL Defence Academy (NDA), the premier tri-services training institute of India, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with University of Lucknow. The MoU will enable the lateral admission of boarded out cadets from the NDA and will also facilitate the knowledge sharing between the two establishments under the umbrella of the National Education Policy (NEP).

Boarded out cadets refers to cadets from a military training academy who are released from the institution before completing their full training due to various reasons including medical ground. The decision to release a cadet is taken after a formal board reviews the cadet’s performance or medical condition.

The formal announcement of the MoU was made by professor Alok Kumar Rai, vice chancellor of the University of Lucknow, when he addressed the passing cadets of the 147th course of the academy at their convocation ceremony which was held on Friday. Rai was the Chief Guest for the convocation. He was welcomed by NDA Commandant Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh. The academic report of 147th course was presented by NDA principal professor OP Shukla.

In his speech, Rai said, “It is imperative for us to realise that a knowledge intensive society and a data driven society will manifest as viable social dynamism looking into the possibilities of the new millennium. To address the shifts in society, Education 5.0 has been developed, which talks about a more humanised teaching with a focus on a student’s social and emotional development and solutions that improve life in society. So Education 5.0 focuses on developing 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity and problem solving rather than routine learning. The cogent reason behind this realisation finds fruition in possibilities of the National Education Policy 2020, that gives fillip to this idea. To leverage this, Lucknow University is forging an MoU with the NDA for greater good of stakeholders.”

Senior officials said that the MoU is currently under consideration and was in the process of getting approval.

“The MoU primarily deals with two important aspects. First being lateral entry to cadets who have been boarded out from the NDA for various reasons. Since University of Lucknow runs all the academic courses that NDA has, the cadets who have been boarded out will be able to continue and complete their education at the University of Lucknow,” an official said adding, “The second aspect is sharing of various knowledge under the umbrella of the National Education Policy. Since University of Lucknow has already implemented the NEP and NDA is in the process of doing so, this sharing will be a step further in that direction.”
