NCP, Congress corporators table resolution praising Delhi govt

The resolution would come up for discussion on April 20.

In an apparent attempt to embarrass the BJP ahead of the 2017 civic polls, members of ruling NCP and Congress in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have tabled a resolution to congratulate the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government for the public welfare decisions and plan to send a copy to BJP-led state and union governments.

A resolution tabled in the general body meeting of PMC jointly by NCP member Ravindra Malvadkar and Congress corporator Sudhir Janjot praises the Delhi government and urges the BJP-led government to take lessons from it.

The resolution would come up for discussion on April 20.

“The BJP-led state government should depute a senior officer to study various decisions of the Delhi government and implement the same in the state. There is nothing wrong in praising and following the good decisions in other states,” said Malvadkar.

The NCP leader said his intentions were clean in praising the good work by a government irrespective of the political party in power. “If the BJP-led government takes such public welfare decisions, I would propose a resolution to praise them as well,” he said.

Congress corporator Janjot said, “I have extended support to the resolution as it praises the public welfare decisions of the Delhi government. We want that the resolution to congratulate the Delhi government for their efforts should be passed in the PMC general body and sent it to the BJP-led state and union governments,” Janjot said.

Newly appointed city BJP chief Yogesh Gogawale said, “I am not aware of the resolution in PMC. I will have to go through the proposed resolution before commenting on it. The party unit in the PMC would take appropriate stand on it,” he said.

Gogawale said the party leader in PMC would be asked to discuss the stand with the city unit ahead of the meeting when the resolution comes up for discussion.

The resolution states that the Delhi government has recently taken important decisions of free medical tests and medicines at all government hospitals, which are backed by a budgetary provision.

It further states that the Delhi government has decided to give 50 per cent discount in electricity bills to the consumers who consume less than 400 units per month and argues that the PMC too should give maximum discount in water charges for those consuming less water.

The Delhi government has decided to check the expenditure on construction of elevated roads and other infrastructure projects, it said, adding that the PMC should also check its unwanted expenditure on works like putting steel poles on footpaths and stop concretisation of tar roads in good condition and use the funds thus saved for health and education of people.
