The Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) in Uttar Pradesh organized a competition for designing signage boards in 2022. “Considering that devotees will be pouring in at Ayodhya from across the world, we have decided to design the signages in Hindi and English. Instead of multiple languages, there will be pictorial depictions for those, who are unfamiliar with the languages,” he said.
He further added there will be Braille script in specific areas of the complex for the vuisally impaired. “The project encompasses a total area of 22 acres, of which two acres will be completed in the first phase,” Date informed.

Considering the cultural significance, he mentioned that the signage boards will be supported by two pipes, representing the vertical lines used in the Vedas and Shlokas. He said, “It’s a belief in Hinduism that the monkey is a devotee of Lord Ram. We have also taken special care in designing to avoid harming them.

The signages are manufactured using aluminum, stainless steel, along with a portion of brass and a special material called ‘Corian’. Many of these plaques will have a special symbol indicating the importance of ‘Suryavansh,’ which is also the emblem of the Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra.

Baarish Date is an architect and holds a master’s degree in design from the Industrial Design Centre of IIT Mumbai. He has established ‘Graphics Beyond,’ a firm headquartered in Goregaon, Mumbai, that designs and implements the concepts of ‘Wayfinding Signages’ for large-scale projects.
