MT-CET website leaves students in the dark for 7 hrs

More than two lakh candidates of the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MT-CET 2013) were left in the lurch on Wednesday, when the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) website developed a glitch in the morning.

More than two lakh candidates of the Maharashtra Technical Common Entrance Test (MT-CET 2013) were left in the lurch on Wednesday, when the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) website developed a glitch in the morning.

The website http://dte.org.in/mtcet2013,which was believed to have developed major snags, started functioning by late evening almost six to seven hours after the scheduled time of result of 11 am.

Some candidates, who checked the result online before 11 am out of curiosity, could see their MT-CET score. A few candidates also managed to get their results through their friends and relatives in foreign countries.

“It was nerve wracking. The DTE website was just not opening. Not just me; my whole family was anxious,” said Pranav Lad,a MT-CET candidate, who was able to access the website only in the evening.

Aakash Kohli, another candidate, who has scored 160 marks, said he came to know about his result through his classmate Salil Bhagwat, who is currently on a vacation in UK.

“I got a call from Salil, asking about my MT-CET score. He knew his score without any hurdle. Then he checked mine and told me,” he said.

Sushrut Thakar, who scored 187 in MT-CET,said he could access the result by 6 am. “But after 11 am,when I tried to cross-check it again, the website simply would not open,” he said.

While the higher-ups in the DTE were unapproachable on their cellphone, the lower rung officials in the technical support said they were trying to figure out the exact cause behind the website’s failure.

“To overcome the technical problem,we put in service another dedicated server and the website started functioning around 5pm,” a DTE official said.

Despite repeated attempts,DTE officiating director SK Mahajan could not be reached for comment. Minister for Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope was also unavailable.

While the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) used to conduct the combined entrance exam for admissions to engineering, pharmacy and health sciences degree courses in Maharashtra till last year,DTE was appointed as the competent authority for MT-CET 2013 by the State government this year.

Pune: The result came as a bit of a surprise to me. I was expecting a score of around 185. I am more than happy, said Anuja Golechha,a student from P Jog Junior College here who topped the MT-CET 2013 from Pune with a score of 192.

Speaking to Newsline after the results were out,Anuja said that the efforts that she put in while preparing for JEE exams paid off in the MT-CET.

“I did not take any special coaching for MT-CET,as I had already done so for JEE. I thought it was an upgraded syllabi for the examination this year. So,I relied on textbooks and other supplementary study material,” she said.

Anuja, whose father is an architect and mother a homemaker, wants to pursue computer science studies. “I am interested in computer science. The world of computers fascinates me. I am keen on getting admission in the College of Engineering Pune (CoEP),” said Anuja, who scored 93.83 per cent in her Class XII examination.
