To ensure that dogs are sterilised safely and hygienically at the dog pound at Naidu hospital, two additional operation tables and IV stands, among other medical equipment, will be provided said Dr Anjali Sabne, deputy health officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
“We will also provide more kennels at the dog pound,” said Sabne, adding that instructions have been issued to the agencies which carry out sterilisations to release the dog only after its condition is stable. At least 40 dogs are sterilised daily and 8-10,000 are sterilised annually, Sabne said. In 2015-16, as many as 11,006 dogs were sterilised, she added.
What what else is in the news
The budgetary allocation for the Animal Birth Control and Anti Rabies Vaccination programme of the PMC has increased. Compared to Rs 43 lakh allocated in 2014-15, Rs 54.40 lakh were allocated in 2015-16.
Out of 16 rabies deaths — one from Pune
The PMC vaccinated as many as 366 dogs on World Rabies Day on September 28. Every month, at least 1,000-1,200 cases of dog bites are reported in the PMC area and the civic body has now provided ARV (anti-rabies vaccine) at all its 17 hospitals and 35 dispensaries, saying that measures can be taken to prevent and control rabies by vaccinating one’s pets.
The theme for World Rabies Day 2016 — Rabies: Educate. Vaccinate. Eliminate. — emphasises two crucial actions that communities can do to prevent rabies. It is in line with the global target to eliminate all human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.
Dr Sabne said that this year, there were 8,490 cases of dog bites and 16 deaths were registered by the PMC. Out of the 16, one was of a man at Katraj Kondhwa road. Last year too, there were 16 rabies deaths but they were all from outside Pune.
