In a revival of the monsoon, the city and surrounding regions, over the last few days, have received abundant rainfall. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said rain will get milder in the city over the next few days, but the ghat areas will receive heavy rainfall.

As heavy rains lashed the city on Friday, several roads in the city witnessed traffic jams and snarls, especially during the peak traffic hours of the day, mainly due to waterlogging.Officials from the traffic control branch said their local units responded to traffic jams on several arterial roads including Baner road, Ganesh Khune road, Sinhagad road, Bundgarden road, Solapur road, Ahmednagar road among others.

Officials said traffic snarls were also reported from connecting internal roads of these arterial roads.
Till 5.30 pm, Shivajinagar received 11.1 mm rain, while Pashan received 13.1 mm. Chinchwad reported 24 mm rain–the highest in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad region. Other parts of the state from North Maharashtra, Nashik, Mumbai and other regions also reported good rainfall. Mahabaleshwar reported 79 mm rain–the highest in the state, while Nashik received 62 mm.

The current revival of the monsoon, said the IMD, was due to the movement of a low pressure area from north and north west of Bay of Bengal and its adjoining region. “As a result of these systems, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall was also observed over east and central India and the adjoining peninsular India between September 4 and 6. However, subdued rainfall continued over northwest India, west central India and Gujarat during most days in the week,” the release read.

Till Friday evening, Maharashtra had received 726 mm rain as compared with 872 mm rain it was expected to receive. Pune district has fared no better with the district receiving 687.2 mm rain as compared with the expected 811.6 mm. Solapur, Sangli and parts of Marathwada are yet to see a healthy revival of rain. Pune may see cloudy skies with isolated incidents of rainfall, as per IMD forecast. The ghat regions are expected to receive intermittent heavy rainfall over the weekend, but other areas are expected to be dry.
