A day after his arrest in an alleged case of bribery, activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Wednesday vandalised the office of the dean of a medical college run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Ashish Shrinath Banginwar (54), the dean of the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, was arrested by the Pune unit of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Tuesday. The college is run by the Medical Education Trust of the PMC.

On Wednesday, the MNS activists led by Prashant Kanojiya and advocate Sachin Pawar barged into the dean’s office and vandalised it. “We suspect this is a big racket. An in-depth investigation should be carried out not just against the dean but also against the PMC officials and political leaders who are involved in the corruption case,” said Pawar, who is a senior office bearer of the MNS in Pune.

According to the ACB officers, Banginwar was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh for the admission of a student in the MBBS course under the “institutional quota”.

The ACB had received a complaint from the father of a student who cleared the NEET 2023 examination. According to the ACB, the student was selected for the MBBS course at the medical college but when his father approached Banginwar, the dean allegedly demanded Rs 16 lakh along with the regular government fees of Rs 22.5 lakh.

The father then approached the ACB and the sleuths of the agency laid a trap to arrest Banginwar.

A first information report (FIR) was lodged against the dean at the Samarth police station under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sudam Pachorkar is investigating the case, the ACB informed.
