An offence of cheating has been registered at the Deccan Gymkhana police station after two youths were duped to the tune of
Rs 23 lakh on the pretext of securing admission to an MBA course at a reputed institute in Pune. Police suspect the two tricksters to have duped more students in the same way.
The suspected admission racket surfaced after two youths approached the police with complaints against two persons,Ankit Verma and Akhil Rane, who had told them that they could secure admission to MBA courses in two different colleges of a reputed institute if they paid the money in advance. They had met somewhere on the Senapati Bapat Road.
The two complainants Vinod Narayandas Mor and Ishan Rakesh Khare paid the duo Rs 15.8 lakh and Rs 7.5 lakh, respectively,in the first week of February, said Sub-Inspector S A Dendge of Deccan Gymkhana police station, who is investigating the case.
He added: The duo had promised them admission to the MBA courses of their choice, but stopped responding to their calls after some time. When the two got suspicious as the admission process had started in the institute, they approached us with the complaint. We suspect the two conmen to have duped a lot more students in the same way. We now know that they even used to flash fake identity cards of the institute.
The police are now trying to trace the duo based on information given by the complaints and have made an appeal to the students for information about two persons with these names to contact the Deccan Gymkhana police station.
