(Source: File)The Pune rural police on Thursday arrested a 26-year-old man who allegedly tried to rape a 20-year-old woman and then killed her when she resisted him.
Police have identified the accused as Dinesh Sanjay Patole, a resident of Uruli Kanchan in Haveli taluka of Pune district.
According to police, the woman, a resident of Koregaon Mul village in Haveli taluka, was found dead on a roadside, around 7.30 pm on October 14.
The probe revealed she was murdered and an injury was observed on her head. Her brother lodged an FIR at the Uruli Kanchan police station.
Teams led by police inspector Avinash Shilimkar of the local crime branch and inspector Sachin Wangde of Uruli Kanchan police station launched a probe into the murder case.
Police checked about 250 videos captured by CCTV cameras on the routes leading to the crime scene and other locations to gather clues about the accused. A technical analysis of the videos and inputs received from informers helped police track down Patole and confirm his involvement in the murder.
Police laid a trap and nabbed the accused on Thursday. A court sent him to police custody till October 27 for further investigation.
Special Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur range) Sunil Phulari said on Friday that Patole followed the woman when he saw her walking alone on a street in Koregaon Mul village.
He allegedly sought sexual favours from her. When she refused, he forcibly dragged her into the bushes and tried to rape her. When she resisted him and shouted for help, he allegedly attacked her with a stone, killing her on the spot, said the IGP.
Superintendent of Pune rural police Sandeep Singh Gill said a motorcycle used by the accused during the crime has been seized.
