It was a day of innovation at the concluding day of the two-day Productivity Summit 2010,organised by the Indian Machine Tools Manufacturers Association (IMTMA).
A total of 327 companies sent entries in the form of case studies for the productivity award,of which 15 were finally shortlisted for making presentations in five categories productivity improvement in SME sector, optimising metalworks processing, productivity through quality improvement, better asset utilisation and manufacturing system redesign. Lokeswara Rao,president,IMTMA said,
This is the first summit that we are holding in Pune and considering that the city has emerged as a major auto hub,we are hoping it wil contribute positively towards the industry here. This year we have introduced a productivity award as we thought that recognising the contributions of individual firms towards improving the quality of the industry would provide a boost towards improving the best practices beingn followed.
GS Mani, assistant general manager,Maruti Suzuki said,We focussed basically on studying the existing patterns of of production in a company and then plan our asset management strategies. A part of our study was also to cut down on the extra energy consumption which would also help reduce the total expenditure, especially on days like Sundays, when other than for maintenance works,we are not actually using the machines.
He further added that in such cases while the actually machines are not used, the complete power supply to it is not shut down. It is like leaving a computer on the stand-by mode. While we think we’re saving power, some power can be saved if it is completely shut down. While there are some machines that cannot be shut down completely as it may lead to its breakdown, there are others with which this technique worked. As per our estimates,we saved somewhere around one lakh rupees worth carbon footprints, said Mani.
Manikandan P,from Madurai based Sundram Fastners, presented his work based on the principle of ‘One Machine One Motor’.
