The Maharashtra Congress will likely not field a candidate in the Akola seat in Lok Sabha elections 2024 and instead support Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar.
”Since the Prakash Ambedkar-led VBA has decided to support some of our candidates, we are also considering not fielding a candidate from the Akola seat. We have sent a proposal to the party high command to consider supporting Prakash Ambedkar from the Akola seat,” Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, the Maharashtra Opposition leader, said on Monday.
The VBA has already announced support for two Congress candidates: Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati in the Kolhapur seat and Vikas Thakre in Nagpur. ”We will decide on lending our support to five more Congress candidates,” said Ambedkar on Sunday.
Though the VBA had decided to go solo in Lok Sabha elections, Ambedkar said the party has not entirely ruled out further seat-sharing talks with the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). ”We are still ready to hold discussions with MVA on seat-sharing,” he said.
Meanwhile, the VBA released its second list of 11 candidates Sunday evening. The party plans to contest 27 out of the 48 seats in Maharashtra. Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held in five phases in Maharashtra. April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20 are the polling dates and the results will be announced as part of the nationwide counting on June 4.
